'Backlash fears' behind Pacific Brands festival Valentino Rockstud Sneakers pullout
The Textile, Clothing and Footwear Union says Pacific Brands has pulled out Valentino Pumps of the Melbourne Fashion Festival because it does not want to face protesters.
The festival was meant to feature two shows by Pacific Brands later this week.
A spokesman for the company says he is unable to say why Pacific Brands has pulled out, but says it will continue to sponsor the festival and supply volunteer uniforms.
The union's national secretary, Valentino Flat Shoes Michelle O'Neill, says the reason is clear.
"They've done that because of concern about the public backlash to their decision Valentino to sack 1,850 workers," she said.
Pacific Brands announced last month that it would shift production to Valentino Ballerina Flats Sale China and just under 2,000 jobs would be lost in Australia.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has promised to get tough on Pacific Brands if it does not guarantee entitlements for its sacked workers.
Mr Rudd says he has not been briefed on redundancy arrangements and entitlements, but the Government will do all it can to help.
"What I will say to you however, with each one of you is that I'll have the Employment Minister write to each of you about the state of your entitlements to make sure that they are guaranteed. If there is a problem with the company, we'll take it out of the company's hide," he said.
A spokesman for Valentino Slingback Pumps Pacific Brands says all workers' entitlements will be paid.
He says talks are being held with the Government to finance retraining initiatives.
