Shark attack victim Chris Boyd, killed at Umbies off Gracetown in WA, mourned by Coolum surfing community

Tributes are flowing for surfer Chris Boyd who was killed by a shark off the https://www.goldengooseshoesit.com/ south-west coast of Western Australia on Saturday.

The 35-year-old father of two was attacked while surfing the Umbies break off Gracetown, about 270 kilometres south of Perth.

Boyd, who moved with his family from Queensland to WA for work about a year ago, grew up on the Sunshine Coast where he was a member of the Coolum Boardriders Club.

Friend Simon Valentine says the club is in mourning following his death.

"Everyone was up here last night just realising what had happened - it hasn't hit home yet," he said.

"He loved the sport, loved surfing, and that's the way he wanted to go."

Coolum Boardriders Club member Daniel Maudsely says Boyd was a mentor to younger surfers. Photo: Chris Boyd grew up on Qld's Sunshine Coast, where he was a member of the Coolum Boardriders Club. (AAP/Coolum Boardriders Club)

"Boyd's been around the whole time. Always out surfing with me," he said.

"He's been a really great mentor both with my surfing and development as a young man. He's going to be sorely missed in the local surfing community."

Boardriders president Daryl Maudsley says the club has taken Mr Boyd's death particularly hard.

"It's one of those surreal sort Golden Goose of moments. You never think it will happen to someone you know. And Chris, being such a gregarious and popular person, his loss is being felt probably more than some people's would," he said.
